To make a really long story short, Holly has an impacted anal gland and had to go the emergency vet tonight and have the most horribly painful procedure done to try to clean it out. Actually, they were both impacted, but the one is infected. She's completely out of it right now from a shot of narcotics. I just dread the next couple of days. She has to go back Tues, Wed, or Thurs to get it infused again. The vet thinks it may still abscess out the skin and cause a hole. I just pray that she heals up from this and doesn't have more problems in the future.

Thanks Audrey. She's not too chipper today. Her little butt is so inflamed! I'm so upset that she's having to go through all of this

Jen I think chis are just prone to it Our vet couldn't give us any ideas for avoiding except getting their glands emptied every couple of months.

Thank you ladies. It's nice to know that it has happened to others and they are doing fine now. I'm really at the end of my rope today! She is so uncomfortable and it definitely looks like it's going to abscess now. When we were applying the hot compresses last night, we were getting junk out. Today, however, we're not getting anything, so I think I'm going to call the vet and see about taking her back in. She doesn't have any interest in eating or drinking either, I think because she knows that it all has to come out the other end, and she doesn't even want to pee because she's so uncomfortable

Oh my gosh poor Holly, that is very painful. Buster had an impacted anal gland twice and on the second time I didn't catch it soon enough and it turned into an abscess and popped. They had to go in and clean it out and stuff. They tried to convince me to take out his anal glands, they can become incontinent after having that done. I said no that I wasn't sure he needed that yet and I'm glad I didn't do it. He hasn't had an issue since 2005.

We went back to the vet, and he said that it is softening up nicely. However, it is HUGE! She's in sooo much pain, and is sooo not herself. She has started eating a little tonight, but only if I hand feed her. She has peed 2 times today, which normally she would have peed about 6 times today! She gets so nervous if I even mention potty, and she'll just go in her box and stand there looking pitiful until I take her out. I think I'm going to have a nervous breakdown!! I'll update you tomorrow. I'll be home with her by myself, and I'm soooo nervous!
