Hang in there Our 2nd Great Dane had anal gland issues his whole life but they never became impacted. My mom used to have to empty them otherwise they'd leak all over the place We always called it swamping.

She's feeling much better today, but still not back to playing or pooing! She actually ate some food last night and today, so we're hoping she poos tonight, even though it will be sooo painful! The gland is still huge

Where is their gland at?

they have an anal gland (or sac) on both sides of their anus. If you look at the anus and imagine it being a clock, the glands are located at about 5:00 and 7:00, so down and off to the sides.

Ok, new update. Last night Van noticed two tiny little blister-looking bubbles on the gland, so I called the vet. I was concerned that I had burned her from the compresses being too hot. He said no, not possible - those little blisters are where the hole is going to be. Well, we woke up this morning to her licking and the gland being less than half the size it was yesterday! So, I've talked to both vets this morning and they both say just to keep doing what we're doing and he'll need to see her in about a week when her antibiotics run out and go back in there UGH to infuse it one more time and then she should hopefully be good to go:)

Thanks Jen - I was so excited. Also, she started eating more like normal and we got the first poo since Sunday yesterday By the afternoon, the gland seemed empty. The hole never got any bigger, which the vet thought it would. It seems to have nothing left in there - just slightly stretched skin that makes it look like it's a little big.
