One of the Great Danes my parents have now had his gland rupture. My mom had to insert antibiotic directly into the gland as well as give it to him orally. Has your vet mentioned having you put antibiotic into the gland?

Well, we're not even close to over with this mess. The next day, her gland was soooo swollen again, like it was about to pop. I rushed her in and the vet said it was just a result of the gland trying to heal with all that inflammation in there. She said she could lance it open if I wanted or I could wait and see if perhaps the blood would all be absorbed and it wouldn't burst, which would be best. On her recommendation, we decided to wait. She said that if it was going to bust, it would happen within 2 days. Well, that night, my hubby looked at it and said "holy cow - there's a yellow head on it now -- it's going to burst!" So, we rushed her back up there. Turns out it wasn't going to burst right then, but she was in a great deal of discomfort, so we had it lanced. She now has a hole leading from her gland to the outside of her body. And yes Jen, we put animax creme right in the hole (it's an antibiotic and anti-inflammatory all rolled into one). I feel soooo bad for her and, quite honestly, for me and hubby too! No one is sleeping, because it's important that she not lick back there to make the hole any bigger. Hopefully it will start healing shut very soon. I'm not about to make her wear an e-collar on top of everything else she's been through, so we're just going to be very tired for the next week or so

They do have soft e collars that don't look bad like the plastic cones. Just in case you get to the point where she does need one This would be something you'd have to look up but someone on another forum mentioned giving your dog oatmeal while they're dealing with gland issues. Again just something I heard you'd need to find out more. Maybe you've already heard of this? I haven't had to deal with gland problems so it's not something I've done myself. I'm really sorry you all have to go through this

Thanks Jen, I appreciate your concern. It means a lot to me I actually have the soft e-coller that the vet gave when she got spayed, but you're talking about the dog that thinks you're killing her when she has to put on a sweater for a picture I'll look up the oatmeal thing! Thanks again!

Thanks guys - she's doing much better. Playing more and acting like she's not so uncomfortable any more. We're back at the vet again tomorrow, so I'll know more then

The latest update -- back at the vet today for scheduled anal gland expression. I really didn't think she would do it because of the hole in the gland and not wanting to pull that hole in any way to set it back in the healing process, but I was wrong! She went back "in", and got very little out which was good. She said it's healing very nicely and the inflammation is going down well. We got a refill on the anti-inflammatory and have another appointment for the same thing next Monday. So, if all continues to go well, the hole should be healed by then I'm assuming. I sure hope it's healed, because I'm still stuck watching her constantly to make sure she doesn't lick. When this is all over, I'm going to sleep for an entire week!

I don't suppose Holly would be okay with wearing those special panties for females that aren't spayed? Then at least you could sleep better. That's great it's healing nicely. Hopefully Monday will be the last of it
