We just moved into the house we live at about 2 months ago. We have 3 other roommates and one of them has a cat. Before we moved in, we use to bring Swiss over to visit and everyone thought it would be funny to train Swiss to chase the cat every time he came around. Well, now that we permenately live here Swiss does it ALL day EVERYDAY. Sam, whose cat it is, is fed up with it. Although there is another dog here, and she also joins in after she see's Swiss run after the cat, some how this is all Swiss's fault according to her. When both dogs run after the cat, its still only Swiss's fault since he is new here. I'm trying to tell her that he is just doing what he thinks he is suppose to, but she yells at him every time. I have tried to teach him not to do this. When he chases after him i yell, and i have even patted his butt and said no. I have tried putting him in our bedroom and telling him no!!! But i don't think I'm getting through to him. I feel awful yelling at him when its something that use to be projected to him as a "good" thing. Any advice? Or is this a lost cause? I just don't like him getting yelled at .

Even if he hadn't been taught to chase the cat I would think it would be hard for Swiss not to once the cat started to run. You could try squirting him with a water bottle. I know some find a water bottle effective for certain things like barking You aren't squirting him in the face it's just a quick one at his back

I was going to ask if there was an update but after seeing the pic you posted I guess things are the same. Haha no update yet. I am going to try to squirt him next time, but i do feel bad because that cat is the worse cat i have ever met. He is so bad. Goes on the kitchen counters, tore up all the couches here. He's just bad, and i bet Swiss see's us all yell at the cat and thinks that he is suppose to be mean. I also mentioned to my boyfriend we should squirt him or something because he is continuing to chase the cat, and he flipped out! Swiss is his ! I will convince him though. Swiss has to learn. He is spoiled. Ohh that reminds me! I should take a picture of Adam's tattoo. He has Swiss tattooed on his arm. Not a picture of Swiss, just his name. I thought you might find that kinda cool. (Or weird like all of his friends! ha-ha)

I like tattoos so I'd love to see it I have a Ryukin on my arm When people first mentioned squirting as something to try I didn't want to do it either and felt bad. Teddy has huge barking issues so I tried squirting him with just a small quick squirt to his back. He wasn't afraid but didn't like it. Now I don't have to squirt him but just show him the bottle. I really didn't know what else to do I would never use one of those collars that squirt something in their face or that shocks them I also heard that the anti barking devices that give off a high pitched noise only dogs can hear can make some dogs bark more. It is just water and you aren't soaking them but if it is traumatic for Swiss because he has water issues I'd try something else

I've had the same experience as Jen. Holly is a barker (just ask anyone who has ever been on the phone with me ). I squirted her one time, and she didn't freak out or anything, but she quit barking right away. Now if I need her to be quiet, I just show her the squirt bottle and she stops barking instantly!

You guys are right! I will try it tomorrow! Its great how dogs learn quick and will automatically stop when they see the bottle. I dont have a spray bottle, but i do have a squirt gun!

My three girls all bark and chase my cat Punkin. They're really bad about it and the only thing I find works is using a squirt bottle. We started using it last year for Cosette's barking because she was an incessant barker and I felt a little bad at first but considered that it's better than yelling at them because that makes them afraid and it doesn't actually hurt them, just kind of a shock. It works pretty well but when she runs they still chase her sometimes. I think it's the running maybe because our new cat doesn't run from them, just looks at them and they leave him alone, they'll even cuddle up with him on the couch. I think they like chasing.
