I have a 7 year old Diva Chihuahua that we got from a rescuer 4 years ago. She is quite attached to me as I was the first human to actually love her and treat her like the very special pup that she is. In a few weeks we are adopting a 3 legged Maltese puppy. I was wondering if you all have any suggestions for introducing the two dogs.
Also I've never had a 3 legged dog. Joe is just over a month old and can take about 4 steps by himself. Any suggestions for caring and helping him learn to get around would be appreciated.
Looking forward to sharing with all of you. Leisa & the furkids

Hi, and welcome!! I have a 2 year old chihuahua -- aren't they all divas ;D I wish I had some great advice for you, because what you are doing is absolutely wonderful Obviously, you're going to have to monitor the chi very closely when Joe is around, because chi's can be pretty active. I'm guessing that since Joe is so young, he'll probably pick up on 3-legged walking pretty quickly, and won't ever seem like a disability for him. I definitely wish you the best of luck with your sweet new boy, and I hope you post a ton of pictures for us to see!

Congratulations on your soon to be new addition! My first Chihuahua Oreo was very attached to me when I got a Yorkie puppy the same for Teddy being super attached when I got Woody. Both times I got new toys that were for both of them to play with and made sure the new puppies had their own bed and place to eat. I kind of let Oreo and Teddy decide when it was okay for the new puppy to enter "their space". With Teddy and Woody I did have to watch that Woody didn't get too pushy with Teddy. Even though Woody was the new puppy he was very confident and didn't mind trying to be the alpha male from day one. I really don't have any experience with three legged dogs I'm sorry, so I can't really offer any helpful info. I'd love to see pictures of your pups!

I haven't figured out this site yet but you can see my pack at Dogster Scooter, the Diva at www.dogster.com/dogs/889884 It took 3 years for her to believe we really loved her. She still jumps if anyone moves too quickly but she also has found a way to Demand attention and I am just so happy that she feels she can do that now. With Lil Joe, I feel like an expectant mother. I somehow found myself discussing my dogs with a new teacher a few days after school began this year and she shared with me how her Maltese had just delivered a new littler of 3, 1 was born with only 3 legs and she was planning to have him put down as he could never be sold. It was just meant to be as I told her I had to have him and I can't wait to get him. We already have a new crate and bedding for him and have placed it in our extra bedroom. I have Scoots in our bathroom so I think that will be better for her (any suggestions) his dogster page is www.dogster.com/dogs/890339. Outside we have the "big boys" who are very very spoiled. My husband is disabled and works in a shop on our farm and the boys spend most of the day with him and are caged at night. Their pages and the story of their rescues are www.dogster.com/dogs/889885 and www.dogster.com/dogs/890218 My "furkids" bring such joy in my life. Sometimes I think they know we saved them, their love can make you smile at the worst of times. Leisa

Scooter is adorable, and such a nice story. She will probably LOVE having a brother in the house. Buddy and Blackie look like very happy, loving dogs. They seem to really enjoy each other's company. My sister has a newfoundland - they have the prettiest coat! I'm so happy for you getting Joe. I know a woman with a chihuahua that had to have a leg removed as an adult and she did great - adapted right away. Hopefully, with this being all that Joe knows, it'll really be like no big deal! As for the sleeping arrangements, if Scooter's in a crate at night, you could actually put them in the bathroom together (in separate crates, of course). That would probably help Joe not be so scared in the beginning when everything is new, and it would probably help Scotter and Joe bond with each other. Just a thought
