Tricia I am sorry to hear this. I would request they do a bile acid test. That will check the liver for sure. Zoey's liver enzymes were elevated due to infection from her pyometra and endometritis. And they kept saying shunt. Please keep us posted. If she has infection from her glands I wonder if that is why it is elevated. Just my thoughts. As soon as I heard of Zoey's test I put her on a low protein diet. If they have liver problems to much protien is not good. I will be praying for a good outcome for Holly. (((((HUGS))))) to you all.

Well, the vet called with the results, and it's not good. She suspects she has a shunt. We're just crushed. She has to go in now and stay at the vet's office for a couple hours to have an acid bile test performed. It looks like we'll get that done early next week. I'll keep you informed as we go along. Thanks for your concern.

I am so sorry to hear this. You must be frantic. They thought Zoey had a liver shunt as well. I am sure you remember I made such an ordeal over it. It ended up being the infection form her pyometra and endometritis causing elevated levels. I wonder if the infected glands could have caused her elevated levels? Has Holly had the bile acid test yet? If not, I would request that ASAP that would give you a better idea if the liver is functioning properly. Has she ever showed any signs of seizures or kinda of "spacey glassy eyed"? Please keep us posted. *HUGS* to you.....

Kay, the initial finding occurred on a regular wellness panel, where the ALT was elevated 2.5 times the high. They said to wait 4 weeks and repeat the test, because that could have very easily been caused by the meds she was on for her anal glands. So yesterday was the day to repeat the test. However, rather than just doing another wellness panel, since everything else was good except the liver enzyme, we did a liver profile instead to see all the enzymes. Everything (including the ALT) came back in normal range except the bile acid which was very high (119 on a normal range of less than 13). That was after 12 hour fast. She goes back in a few days to have the acid bile test done, which a fasting baseline and then the food, and then the test 2 hours later again.
