Holly had her yearly vet visit yesterday (a day I dread for 364 days leading up to it ;D), but it ended up to be not so bad! First, Holly is an absolute psycho at the vet. She gets to whining and panting so much that her mouth gets so dry and her lips get stuck up on her gums But when the vet finally comes in the room, then she's fine. I guess it's the anticipation that makes her nuts. So anyway... last year she got terrible diarrhea after her shots, so I decided this year to break them up into two separate visits. Yesterday was going to be rabies and I was going to bring her back in 2 weeks for parvo/distemper (unless they agreed to do the titre test to see if she even needed those shots). Well, much to my surprise, they said she doesn't even have to come back for those other shots!! They've started only giving parvo and distemper every three years because of all the research about over-vaccinating! So, as long as we make it through the next couple days without her getting from the rabies shot, she's good to go for another couple years (oh yeah, forgot to say, we got the three year rabies shot this time).

Awesome! I've heard about over vaccinating. My guys don't get the parvo/distemper vaccine.

Do you guys give the 1 yr or 3 yr rabies vaccine? This was the first time I've ever been given a choice - before it was only the 1 yr that was available. I was a little scared of the longer term one, but the vet assured me that it's no harder on the dog than the other one, so I did it knowing that the next two years we'd be able to skip it!!

This was a number of years ago but Oreo had a terrible reaction to the multiple year rabies vaccine. I don't remember if it was the two or three year. He started to swell up and had to go to the emergency room.
In California when his rabies vaccine was due my vet gave him a benadryl shot before the vaccine. I waited around awhile at the vets after his vaccine to see if he would have a reaction again. A few hours after we got home he started to swell up again but not bad enough to go back to the vets. After that my vet recommended Oreo not get a rabies vaccine.

Oh wow - how scary! I've been watching her like a hawk since yesterday afternoon, but all she does in sleep, so it's not that hard Do you have a rabies law in California?

At one time the town sent people to go house to house to make sure dogs were vaccinated and had a license. As for Oreo after he had the final bad reaction my vet was going to give me a letter to submit when his license was due saying how he could no longer get a rabies vaccine but he passed away before that time came Teddy and Woody haven't had any problems

I would LOVE to not get her any vaccines, because I know she's not at any risk of rabies and the parvo and distemper shots she got when she was younger will probably last a lifetime, but I'm too chicken My cocker bit the vet one time (I let hubby take her, so go figure), and if she hadn't been up to date on her rabies vaccine, they would have quarantined her for 10 days, which I know would have killed her because she never spent one minute of her life in a cage. Since then, I've always made it a point to get the shot at least a day before it's due so if it happens again, I can argue against the quarantine.
